Bricklaying
Brick walls are constructed by interlocking individual bricks that are then held together with a mortar usually based upon sand and cement. The bricklayer will lay in courses and the interlocking brick patterns are known as bonds. Two of the most common bonds used in bricklaying are the Flemish bond and English bond.
Bricks are made from natural materials and can be both fired and unfired. Fired bricks are placed in a kiln and it is this heating process that introduces pleasing colour variations and makes the brick very durable. Mud bricks are usually air-dried and require a mechanical binder, such as straw to hold them together. The finished wall is often covered in stucco to provide more weather resistance.
A skilled local bricklayer can construct a brick wall that is both level and plumb and ensure that the bricks are laid to give the greatest visual appeal to the constructed wall. In the case that the brick wall is not meant to be seen, then the finished brickwork can be covered with a plaster or cement render.
If the brick wall is large, then a team of bricklayers will work together on the bricklaying job. The bricklaying team consists of two bricklayers and a labourer. It is the job of the labourer to provide sufficient bricks and mortar to the bricklayers so that they can work efficiently.
Block Laying
Block laying uses many of the traditional bricklaying skills to create a wall that is built correctly. Concrete blocks are an economical and fast construction method and they are typically used as factory walls or retaining walls, although they do have many other uses.
Where the appearance is important the block wall can be finished with cement render or painted to your specification. Pickles Bricklayings team of experienced Sydney bricklayers have rendered the exterior finish of a number of new homes so feel free to examine the example photographs in our gallery.
Brick Repointing
Over time the mortar that bonds the bricks together can deteriorate and this can allow water ingress into the home and in serious cases, the structural integrity of the wall may be affected.
Many houses built in the Victorian era in the Sydney inner city area have been affected over the years, by the proximity to the coastal environment and are now in need of repointing. To replace the original pointing is not an easy task. The bricklayer first has to cut out the existing mortar and then carefully apply new mortar in between the brickwork.
Often it is only a part of the property that is affected and it takes a skilled bricklayer to be able to match the new pointing to the existing brickwork as not only is it the colour that has to be matched, but the type of mortar and the original pointing style also.
Lintel Replacement
A brick lintel is the part of the brickwork that spans an opening between two vertical supports. This part of the brickwork, for example, over a window or door has to support the weight of the brickwork above it.
If there is any movement of the building foundations, then cracks can appear in brick lintels and the brickwork should be replaced. The bricklayers at Pickles Bricklaying are experienced in the replacement of brick lintels and can assess the work involved.
Brick Fences
A brick fence is most usually constructed along the boundary of a property and can consist of only brick or it can be a composite design, consisting of different materials.
The design should be in keeping with the property and neighbourhood. Council restrictio
